Two British girls on vacation in southern Italy were gang-raped by a group of men at a house party this week, according to disturbing new reports.
The girls were punched, kicked and raped by eight men who crashed the party they attended in the Basilicata province of Matera sometime overnight Monday into Tuesday, Metro UK reported.
Four men described as “well-known bullies and thugs” have been arrested in connection to the terrifying attack, the outlet reported.
Those arrested are between 19 and 23 years old, police said during a Friday press conference, according to The Guardian.
The men, from Pisticci, are accused of rape and grievous bodily harm, the paper reported.
Matera prosecutor Angelo Onorati ordered their arrests because of the “brutality, severity and savagery of the violence committed, in devious ways, that could be repeated against other women,” according to the report.
Four more men who have not yet been identified are also alleged to have taken part in the heinous attack, which took place in the garden of the villa where the party was held.
“On the night between 7-8 September, in Marconia di Pisticci, sexual violence was committed against two foreign minors who were at a party in a villa,” Matera authorities said in a press release obtained by the paper. “The investigative unit of Matera police headquarters has begun investigations in coordination with the public prosecutor’s office.”
The girls, whose ages were not reported, reported what had happened after being admitted to Matera’s Madonna della Grazie hospital.
Both were in a state of shock and marks on their bodies indicated they had been attacked, according to local reports.
The girls have since been discharged from the hospital, according to the news agency Adnkronos.
One of the girls has family in the area, reports say.
