NSW Police are on the hunt for a man and a woman as they continue to search for answers as to how a diver died during a drug drop gone wrong in Newcastle this week.

Police found more than $20 million worth of cocaine in nearby water after the man died at the scene.

On Wednesday, Queensland superyacht tour operator James Blake Blee, 62, was arrested in Cairns during an alleged attempt to board a flight to Singapore and to flee Australia after his involvement in the failed operation, police say.

He was charged with importing a large commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and large commercial drug supply.

NSW Police are set to apply for his extradition from Queensland to NSW on Friday.

Police are now appealing to the public in the hunt for a man and a woman in their search for answers.

The man is described as about 178 centimetres tall and of an athletic build, while the woman is of thin build, about 150 to 160 centimetres tall, has a tanned complexion and has blonde-grey hair.

Police will provide an update on their investigation at 1pm AEST.
