In April 2020, Kayleigh McEnany was named President Donald Trump’s new White House press secretary, per the New York Times, and now, her name is on everyone’s lips. Given her career path, it seems like McEnany was essentially made for her new role. After she graduated from Harvard Law School in 2016, McEnany was hired as a contributor for CNN. According to Business Insider, McEnany is an “outspoken, combative defender of the president,” who made a name for herself “during the 2016 election for frequently appearing as a Trump surrogate on cable news networks.”
In 2017, McEnany was named Republican National Committee spokeswoman. The following year, she published a book, The New American Revolution: The Making of a Populist Movement. Then, in 2019, she joined the Trump campaign as national press secretary. Now, she’ll trade running from rally to rally for an office in the West Wing.
As press secretary, McEnany will continue to do much of the work she’s already done for Trump – say nice things about him in front of the cameras. A “person familiar with the press operation” told The New York Times that one of McEnany’s key responsibilities will be to “build out a rapid response team similar to what exists in the campaign, and possibly, to eventually give press briefings.” That will likely be no problem for her as for the past four years, she’s been one of his most active supporters (just look at her Instagram).
Kayleigh McEnany was made for her new role
While being on Donald Trump’s side often means answering hard-hitting questions from liberal reporters, Kayleigh McEnany has never had a problem showing her support for the president — controversial as some of his beliefs may be.
In a Feb. 25, 2020, interview on the Fox Business show Trish Regan Primetime, the new press secretary said, “We will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here, we will not see terrorism come here, and isn’t that refreshing when contrasting it with the awful presidency of President Obama?” Just like Trump, McEnany has been an outspoken critic of former president Barack Obama. “How I Met Your Brother — Never mind, forgot he’s still in that hut in Kenya. #ObamaTVShows,” she tweeted in 2012 when rumors circulated that Obama was born in Kenya rather than in the United States.
While, at the time of this writing, it’s unclear when McEnany will jump into her new role, she’s staying pretty busy in the interim. According to The New York Times, she’s been participating in online campaign events. McEnany will replace Stephanie Grisham, who replaced Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
