Season five of The Masked Singer US kicked off with a bang when famous Muppet Kermit the Frog was the first in the competition to be sent home. Fans of the unpredictable Fox series were certainly caught off guard, though some claimed they instantly recognised the voice of the iconic amphibian.

Kermit the Frog just became the first celebrity to be sent home during the fifth season of Fox’s chaotic talent show, The Masked Singer.

The host of the Muppet Show popped out of the Snail’s costume after his rendition of ‘You Make My Dreams’ by Hall & Oates failed to impress the voters.

This season has already promised to shake things up with wildcard contestants and new character Cluedle-Doo stopping by with more cryptic hints throughout the competition.

However, this week’s episode saw the series reach new levels of hilarity when the legendary Muppet’s reveal was met with stunned reactions from fans.

Before his unmasking, the show’s judges appeared stumped by Snail’s performance.

Many recognised Kermit’s dulcet tones, though some of the panellists assumed the costumed performer was changing their voice to sound like the character.

Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong both felt the singer could have been Family Guy creator and voice actor Seth McFarlane.

Although some viewers felt the Racoon deserved to be sent packing this week, replacement host Niecy Nash had the honour of revealing the show’s first non-human contender.

The judges were just as shocked as the viewers at home, with Jeong claiming Kermit as the most famous guest of the whole series.

After his unprecedented reveal, Kermit said: “You know it’s as they say.

“It’s not easy being green, but sometimes it’s even harder being a snail.”

On Twitter, one user dubbed the reveal: “A twist that literally no one saw coming.”

Kermit also faced off against the impressive Russian Dolls, whom fans may have rumbled as the Hanson trio.

Plus, both Seashell and Porcupine got a leg up over the competition after beating the eliminated Muppet in the first round of season five.

Over on Twitter, fans of the series were naturally bewildered when they discovered Kermit the Frog had made an appearance on The Masked Singer.

One viewer said: “Kermit The Frog was the first celebrity eliminated on The Masked Singer and I died laughing at that reveal.”

Another joked: “So my takeaway from tonight’s episode of The Masked Singer is that Jenny McCarthy was somehow able to mistake Kermit the Frog for Ted Cruz.”

Others were rightfully furious that the wholesome frog was chosen as this year’s first elimination.

“Kermit deserved better and I’m gonna be salty about him not winning this season,” tweeted one viewer.

Meanwhile, some viewers mused we should have seen this coming now both the Muppets and The Masked Singer’s network Fox are both owned by Disney.

“I guess Kermit makes sense since Disney owns Fox and they just released the Muppet Show on Disney+”, wrote one fan on Reddit.

Season five has already proven that anything can happen on The Masked Singer, so viewers will have their work cut out for them as they try to identify the remaining players.

The Masked Singer season 5 continues Wednesday, March 17 on Fox.
