Fans finally have their first look at the action-packed new season of The Handmaid’s Tale. The series returns to Hulu next year and moves the action to Canada as rebellious Handmaid June (played by Elisabeth Moss) reignites the fight against Gilead.

Production on the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale was put on hold following the outbreak of coronavirus across the globe.

Hulu and MGM will restart filming when the cast and crew can be assured of their safety, with only two weeks of the show’s schedule completed before the lockdown.

The highly anticipated release for the new season was recently pushed back to 2021, though no specific premiere has been confirmed.

Thankfully the streaming service has awarded viewers’ patience by releasing a first look teaser trailer for season four on YouTube, including some brand new footage.

New clips of June, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Moira (Samara Wiley) confirm the new instalment will pick up where last year’s finale left off.

After June was shot after being spotted on-the-run by a Gilead guard, her fellow Handmaids will nurse her back to health so the underground resistance continues.

Meanwhile, Commander Lawrence could be joining the Waterfords (Joseph Fiennes and Yvonna Strahovski) in confinement, while Moira takes charge of the smuggled children.

The new trailer was accompanied with the tagline “Change never comes easy. Blessed be the squad”, referring to lines in the upcoming season.

As soon as the promo was released, eager fans flooded to the comments to share their excitement for the return of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Some viewers simply voiced their excitement for new episodes, while others speculated about the upcoming twists and turns the next season could have in store.

One fan replied: “Just watching this trailer even gives me goosebumps. I don’t know how I can wait until next year.”

While others were shocked to discover the new release date, with one fan saying: “Oh come on! After getting a trailer notification I thought it was gonna release this coming July… now I have to wait till 2021.”

Even more fans were quick to spot some intriguing new clues for season four, including the return of Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) and why Aunt Lydia’s face seems so battered.

Another fan suggested: “It looks like Nick comes back. Also Commander Lawrence looks like he has been arrested.

“I wonder who beats Lydia up and I also wonder who she is talking to, other Aunts or Handmaids?”

The new promo also follows last year’s announcement that Hulu and MGM are working on a series based on Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel, The Testaments.

Although the next season isn’t set to adapt the events of the sequel, it could set the stage for the two plots to eventually converge.

One more fan remarked: “Anyone read The Testaments and is wondering if they’ll set things up to veer in that direction?”

Atwood’s new book received widespread acclaim and was named the joint winner of last year’s Booker Prize, so the world of The Handmaid’s Tale is expected to continue on-screen well into the future.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 will return on Hulu in 2021. Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Hulu and Channel 4.
