Ever since the start of their relationship, Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) has manipulated Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) in Coronation Street – first by going over the top in his affection and lovebombing of her and then by slowly asserting his coercive control over her.
Fans have watched the bully chip away at Yasmeen’s confidence and start to take hold of every part of her life so that she felt entirely reliant on him. His behaviour got worse, with secret cameras, aggressive verbal attacks and even the murder of her beloved pet chicken which he then forced her to eat.
Despite growing concerns from Alya (Sair Khan), Yasmeen has continued to have Geoff’s hold on her and has protested that he is a good man and husband – even accepting that it was her fault that he got angry in the showdown that forced her to stab him and almost kill him.
Now she languishes in prison and, as Geoff has feared, she starts to see the clouds part and see his behaviour for what it is – leading her to make some shocking revelations to Alya.
As Alya is devastated to learn what Geoff did with Charlotte the chicken and that he timed her and forced her to clean the house daily, she insists that her gran pleads not guilty.
Yasmeen is terrified at the prospect as she is worried about how Geoff will react, which shows Alya just how much influence he exerts over her still. However, after a pep talk, Yasmeen steps up to the stand at her hearing and enters her plea of not guilty.
Back on the Street, it’s the worst thing possible that Geoff could hear as he fears being exposed as the monster that he is.
He urges Tim (Joe Duttine) to help him put on a united front and quell Yasmeen’s claims – but has Yasmeen’s brave first step signed the beginning of the end for Geoff?
