Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has given hope that Johnny Connor’s (Richard Hawley) secrets from the past may not be the end of the line for the much-loved couple as she has teased that every couple faces challenges in soap.
However, it will take a lot of getting past after Johnny discovers that the security guard from the initial robbery with Scott Emberton (Tom Roberts) died from alcohol abuse in the wake of his trauma.
As Johnny decides it’s time to come clean to Jenny, Sally Ann has warned there are troubled times ahead – but Jenny may be more forgiving than we might expect.
The actress told Metro.co.uk: ‘Initially she knows something is not right with Johnny and she keeps asking him and he bites her head off. Johnny does try to open up to her about what is going on and this secret but every time he nearly gets there, she puts 2 and 2 together and comes up with 25.
‘She thinks it’s his MS that has resurfaced. He takes that way out and goes with that. It’s really nice because you do see they have a really genuine love for each other. As things start to not fit in, Jenny sees there are these lies.
‘He only tells her a portion of the truth – she has put up with a lot from him – from an affair with Liz to buying the Rovers, going to Spain – she went along with it all. Johnny has never involved her in the initial stages. For Jenny it’s more that every five minutes that something else has happened.’
So when Jenny does discover that he has a criminal past, how does she react
Sally Ann admitted: ‘She’s totally shocked. She knew he wasn’t whiter than white and a bit of a wideboy but maybe that he was just selling some dodgy tape recorders, something low level. She quite liked that he was a bit of a bad boy with an edge.
‘But this kind of past – so violent and so serious – she doesn’t know what to do with it. She protects herself and completely ignores what she has been presented with.
‘It is the lies – for Jenny, she keeps trying to justify and find excuses which you must do in any situation where you love somebody but they have done something abhorrent. You try and find reasons.
‘Jenny’s out for him is that he has not that person anymore and he has been a good man for years. She accepts that what he did was dreadful but it was a long time ago. Why should modern Johnny be punished, she doesn’t quite understand it. In her mind, she is justified.’
The star added: ‘You can only be happy for so long. I don’t know what’s going to happen with them. Audiences like to see a couple that can stay together – that is pretty boring, that’s dull.
‘They have to have challenges and this is that. What I love about it is that you can see they genuinely love each other. But can that love withstand everything being thrown at it?’
