As the programme started, Piers' replacement Ben Shephard told viewers: "Good morning, as you can see I'm not Piers!"

Susanna, 49, then continued: "Piers tweeted this last night if you're confused and you haven't been on Twitter," before Piers' announcement appeared on the screen.

She added: "The test results should be back today, we send our very best wishes to you, Piers, and we will be on our very best behaviour while you're not here."

Turning to Dr Hilary Jones, she asked: "People will ask, in the circumstances, if there is a symptom should the rest of us be at work?"

Hilary reassured viewers: "I spoke to Piers yesterday. He doesn't have symptoms which are normally associated with COVID-19 but, as he says, out of an abundance of caution, he's taken a test and is staying off until he knows exactly. Hopefully the test will be negative and he'll be back tomorrow."

Controversial host Piers made the announcement on Sunday night that he would not be returning to the ITV breakfast show until he received his test results.

He wrote to his 7.4million followers: "UPDATE: On medical advice, and out of an abundance of caution for a mild symptom that arose in past 48hrs, I've had a test for COVID-19 and so won’t be working on @GMB until I get the result back, which should be tomorrow."

Piers' announcement was met with well wishes from fans as one wrote: "Hope you're ok. Fingers crossed its negative!"

Another said: "Get well soon, @PiersMorgan. Hope you're back on the screens soon, the country needs you."

Good Morning Britain hosts have been respecting the government's social distancing guidelines by staying two metres apart while appearing alongside one another at the ITV studio.

Piers has regularly been scrutinising the government for their reaction to the health crisis, and has been met with mixed reactions for his grilling of government officials on his show.
