Denise delighted Hollyoaks fans when she joined the cast last January as Trish Minniver, the mother of established character Maxine Minniver (Nikki Sanderson). During her time on the Channel 4 soap, the character has been at the centre of some high-profile storylines, including being the partner of villain Fergus Collins (Robert Beck) and informing her daughter newcomer Dave Chen-Williams (Dominic Power) was her birth father. However, during Tuesday night’s episode, the character made her exit from the television show and left her daughter to fend for herself once more. Here is everything you need to know about why Loose Women panellist Denise decided to quit.
Why has Denise Welch quit Hollyoaks as Trish Minniver?
There hasn’t been an official statement on why Denise has quit as Trish, with neither the show nor the actress detailing why.
It is likely the exit was written in for storyline purposes as writers could have felt they had done as much as they could with the character.
With Fergus dead, Maxine knowing who her birth father is and her dance academy no longer in existence, there was nothing left for the mother of two to do.
However, the Channel 4 soap did pay homage to the feisty village resident as they shared a clip of Trish bidding farewell to her daughter on social media.
Captioning the short video, they wrote: “Let’s say farewell to Trish Minniver! You’ve made us angry, sad… but also given us plenty of lols along the way. One thing’s for sure, we’re gonna miss you.”
The Loose Woman star has posted on social media about her exit but has simply responded to fans’ reactions to her character’s departure.
As she wasn’t killed off, there is the possibility Denise could return to the show in the future, either in a more regular role or in a guest capacity.
Since her arrival last year, there was a hint dropped she wasn’t going to be sticking around for too long or indeed would become a permanent fixture.
Usually, when characters become regulars, they are included in the show’s opening titles which play at the beginning of each episode.
However, Trish never appeared in them, despite there being several updates over the past year.
Going to miss Denise
How did Denise Welch leave Hollyoaks as Trish Minniver?
With Fergus’ villainous actions weighing heavy on her shoulders and despite righting his wrongs, Trish couldn’t shake off the feeling she wouldn’t be able to move on with her life living in the village.
As Dave also moved into the village with his family over Christmas, the mother of two couldn’t shake off the feeling she needed to leave.
Although Maxine pleaded with her to stay, the discovery of Dave being her birth father left her wanting nothing to do with the feisty character.
Just before Trish did leave the village, the mother and daughter made up as Maxine said she understood why she’d been kept in the dark about her birth father.
She also heard Trish praising her in front of Dave; the first time she’d ever heard her mother say nice things about her.
Wanting to begin a new chapter of her life, Trish decided she was going to go and live with her youngest daughter, Mitzeee Minniver (Rachel Shenton) in America.
Getting into a black cab, she shared an emotional farewell with her daughter and Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), apologising for all she’d done since arriving in the village.
“A mini-break won’t fix the mess I’ve made. I need a whole new start,” the mother of two told her daughter, adding she was excited to move to Los Angeles.
With Maxine pleading with her to stay, Trish told her: “You’ll be fine. All I’ve ever done is bring you down and this is your time to fly.
“You and me both,” she continued, with Warren stating he would take care of Maxine and her daughter Minnie until Trish returned.
Taking to Twitter, fans reacted to Denise and Trish’s shock exit from the show, with Lee writing: “Going to miss @RealDeniseWelch great actress.”
“Farewell @RealDeniseWelch aka Trish Minniver #Hollyoaks,” Grianne posted, with Sean adding: “I miss Trish already. Got so much love for Denise Welch.”
Team Denise Welch commented: “We will miss Trish Minniver, it feels like they only scratched the surface with Trish but you never know what the future holds.
“Anyhow, great to see @RealDeniseWelch show everyone what a fantastic actress she is! #hollyoaks @Hollyoaks,” they continued.
Manda Louise shared: “Actually sad to see Trish go. I hated her at first @RealDeniseWelch thanks for giving us a fantastic character development #hollyoaks.”
Speaking at the time of her arrival on the show, Denise was excited to take on the character of Trish, having starred in soaps such as Coronation Street and EastEnders in the past.
The Loose Women star said: “I am thrilled to be joining the cast of Hollyoaks in this, their 25th year.
“I’m looking forward to working with some old friends and making new ones. The character of Trish Minniver is an actor’s dream and I can’t wait to introduce her to you.”
Some of the other acting roles Denise has had in the past include playing characters in shows such as Waterloo Road and Benidorm.
It is thought Denise will continue to contribute as a panellist on Loose Women following her exit from the show.
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6:30pm on Channel 4. First look episodes air weeknights at 7pm on E4.
