Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has revealed that she knows the outcome of her character’s ongoing cancer storyline.
The actress — who portrays Vanessa Woodfield in the long-running ITV drama — said: ‘I won’t say which way it goes, but I was told straight away. As soon as [Emmerdale boss] Jane Hudson brought me up, she told me the storyline and the outcome.’
‘I didn’t even have time to think about it one way or another. As soon as I was told the story, I was told the outcome. It wasn’t a case of ‘here’s the story but we don’t know yet’. So I’ve always known what happens in the storyline but my lips are sealed…’.
‘People who are going through it are saying: ‘Well done to Emmerdale for not shying away when describing symptoms and talking about poo, because it’s not often done’.
Vanessa discovered that she had bowel cancer several months back, but she was initially unable to tell her loved ones because she was taken hostage by Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather).
Following this ordeal, she opened up about her diagnosis to girlfriend Charity Dingle (Vanessa Woodfield) — who’s been incredibly supportive ever since.
In the coming episodes Vanessa attends her first chemotherapy session alone, but Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) — who just happens to be walking by — spots her and decides to keep her company, something which Charity’s not too pleased about given that Kerry was responsible for Frank Clayton’s (Michael Praed) death.
Emmerdale continues Friday 17 April at 7pm on ITV.
