Neville (played by Ralf Little) takes his job as Detective Inspector very seriously and when was first introduced to Death in Paradise, it seemed he was going to be a jobsworth. However, the return of Detective Sergeant Florence (Josephine Jobert) has skewered things for her boss slightly as his colleagues have been able to see a softer side to him when he is around his love interest. It’s not been confirmed whether the love-struck pair are going to become an official couple, but fans of the BBC show think heartbreak could be on the horizon.

The speculation about the future of their romance comes after the show’s official Instagram account revealed that the programme was back in production.

Some pictures of Neville star Ralf, 41, and newcomer Shantol Jackson – who will be playing a new officer – were posted on the social media platform to announce the news.

Captioning the images, a small statement read: “We’re so excited to announce that cameras have started rolling on the eleventh series of Death in Paradise.

“And that Saint Marie Police Force has a brilliant new recruit. A very warm welcome to Shantol who will be playing ambitious young sergeant, Naomi Thomas.”

Although the absence of Florence from the pictures might be a clue, it was a comment a fan made that could be a cryptic glance into the pair’s future.

“First [Richard] Poole loved Camille [Bordey] but then nothing happened. Then Kris Marshall [Humphrey Goodman] loved Camille and nothing happened.

“I don’t think I could survive if nothing happens between Florence and Neville,” they continued, somewhat hinting at a gloomy end to their relationship.

It is true that no romance between a detective and their second in command has ever been successful, parting ways as friends if anything.

However, with no confirmation Florence is going to be a permanent fixture on the show after returning for season 10, DI Parker’s chance at love could be snatched away.

DI Parker could move on quite quickly with another colleague instead as the fact his picture was posted alongside newcomer Naomi’s could be another big hint of what’s to come.

It’s not been announced whether the new sergeant is in a relationship or not but if she is single, she could develop feelings for her boss.

Having been rejected by Florence, Neville could see this as another chance to find happiness on the island of Saint Marie.

Could the past of his predecessors once again elect his chances and will he have to succumb to the fact there is no hope of a romance for him?

Taking to Twitter, fans have been sharing their outpouring of support for Neville and Florence to become an official item.

One viewer posted: “I still can’t believe we have to wait till January for more Floreville scenes. @RalfLittle @Josie_official thank you for playing Neville and Florence so amazingly.”

Another wrote: “I’m totally enjoying season 10. I have so many questions about Florence and Neville. I love me some Josephine Jobert and #DeathInParadise.”

Whilst a third commented: “I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens between Florence and Neville. I had no idea that he was sweet on my girl. I wonder if she feels the same way about him. Can it work between them?”

Executive producer Tim Key has teased some information on what’s to come from season 11 and offered an update on Neville and Florence.

The show’s boss said: “We’re so excited to be back in Guadeloupe and calling action on our eleventh series – and also to welcome Shantol to the cast.

“She’s an amazing addition to the team and we can’t wait for the audience to meet Naomi. We also can’t wait to share some huge surprises we’ve got in store – after the success of our tenth anniversary.

“We’ve set the bar pretty high, so we’re pulling out all the stops to make this our best series yet,” he continued.

Could one of these surprises be that Neville will break the chain and a detective will finally fall in love?

Death in Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
