Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has revealed a dark twist is on its way for her character Eileen Grimshaw.
In recent episodes, Eileen’s long lost son Todd (now played by Gareth Pierce) has shown up on her doorstep, bringing all the trouble with him.
And it sounds as though things are going to get pretty traumatic for the family, as the actress appeared on today’s instalment of This Morning to tease Eileen’s future.
Talking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, she said: ‘[Todd] has always been a handful.
‘The fact he has disappeared for so many years, [Eileen] didn’t know where he’d been if he was alive, whether he was dead.
‘And for him just to turn up with even more trouble, it’s just no surprise but it’s not what she needs.’
The 57-year-old pressed: ‘After everything she has been through, it’s like she doesn’t need to be back in that murky world again, but here he is and he’s brought all that to her doorstep.’
Ruth couldn’t help but ask whether or not Eileen’s maternal instincts will kick in, after all she is Todd’s mother.
To which Sue stated: ‘She’ll never desert her boys no matter how much the let her down, but yeah of course she’ll help him out, but she does have her limits.
‘It does get dark to the point where Mary [Patti Clare] and the undertaker George come up with the idea of holding Todd’s funeral, and Eileen finds out when she walks around the corner and sees a hearse with a flower tribute saying, “Todd.”
‘And obviously, she just thinks, “this is absolutely ludicrous this, I’m surrounded by idiots.”
‘She ends up with a gun to her head in her house it’s like going back in time again, she’s not impressed at all.’
Off-screen, however, the pair get on like a house on fire, and Sue is excited to see where Gareth takes the role, after he took over from Bruno Langley.
‘He just has the essence of Todd, which is a really hard thing to do you know, as an actor to come in as a character that already has a history,’ she said. ‘But he did it so beautifully.
‘Now he’s at this stage where he can take it where it needs to go – he can make the part his own now.’
