Chef Raymond Blanc has urged Britons to buy homegrown apples to boost UK economy. The three-Michelin stars chef praised the local produce saying that despite being a Frenchman he had to recognise that British apples  “are magnificent”. The appeal comes amid repeated appeals from the British Government for Britons to buy locally in a bid to support British farming in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

GB News host Isabel Oakeshott said: “The celebrity chef Raymond Blanc has a particular passion for British apples and pears.

“So much so that I think Raman has created his own apple orchard and has tasted 150 varieties of apples.

“Thank you for joining us, Raymond. The UK apparently has a huge apple harvest.”

She asked: “I didn’t know this, but something like 1.6 billion apples and pears, is that right?”

The chef said: “That is absolutely correct, every year.

“And that is wonderful news for the country for the farming community for the local values.

“Every year, there’s 1 million trees being and that is really exciting because when I came, there were cemeteries of orchards.

“Every fruit was unpicked because subsidies were given to different forms of agriculture.”

He went on: “So suddenly all chains were lost. And now there’s a rebirth, and extraordinary, brilliant farmers, growers who truly are bringing in some new method of growing new varieties.

“Or a new system as well by which apples and pears are being grown-very caring for the sustainability, caring for the environment, caring for biodiversity

“There’s very little chemicals being used as well which is very important to ensure that the orchards are healthy.

“I think those apples absolutely magnificent and I am a Frenchman.”

According to new research by British Apples and Pears (BAPL) and the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), homegrown apples and pears are the most ‘green’ on UK supermarket shelves.

The UK economy grew by 0.4 percent in August as more people dined out and went on holiday.
