A vegetarian who hasn’t eaten meat for 45 years claims she was left vomiting after biting into a McDonalds Vegetable Deluxe burger which contained a chicken fillet.

Louise Davies, 50, said she had stopped at the McDonalds drive-thru in Hardwicke, Gloucester, on her way home to Stonehouse on May 28 as a treat for daughter, 11, who had just finished school for the holidays.

The mother-of-one, who has been vegetarian for most of her life, said she merrily bit into the ‘vegetarian burger’ but ‘immediately’ vomited after tasting the meat.

The McDonalds Vegetable Deluxe burger is supposed to contain two red pepper and pesto veggie goujons, but Louise said she got an awful shock when she realised it was chicken.

The civil servant said despite not eating meat for 45 years, she instantly recognised the taste of the chicken after biting into the burger and rushed to the toilet to vomit.

She claims she remained unwell and unable to eat for the following 12 hours and said she not feels she ‘can’t trust anything’ from the fast-food restaurant.

McDonald’s has apologised for the mistake and said it would investigate the incident, admitting: ‘This was simply not good enough.’

Louise said: ‘I immediately was sick because I haven’t eaten meat in over 40 years. The texture and everything, I just had to rush to the toilet.

‘That’s the effect meat will have on me. Even the smell of it, I don’t like.

‘I didn’t actually eat it, I bit into it and straight away I vomited. I spat it out and threw up. I didn’t think to look in it, I just thought it was a veggie burger.’

She said she only vomited once but ‘couldn’t eat’ for the rest of the evening.

Louise said: ‘It just reminded me of being a child in my grandma’s kitchen, just the taste of it. It made me feel sick even then.

‘I now can’t trust anything from McDonald’s to be vegetarian. It’s not the best place to get vegetarian food to be honest if they’re that careless. I feel upset and a bit betrayed.’

Louise said she eventually managed to eat something more substantial the following morning with a strawberry, pineapple, banana and blackberry smoothie.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said: ‘We absolutely recognise that it is not acceptable to serve meat when our vegetarian product has been ordered, and we sincerely apologise to the customer for the mistakes that were made in this case.

‘This was simply not good enough. We have a number of procedures in place to avoid inaccurate orders, but in this case these were clearly not followed, and we are looking into why this occurred.’
