Having signed up at the age of 16, he then decided against the career after weeks of training camp.
Robson then tried his hand as a professional boxer before realising he wanted to focus more on his acting career.
As a young man, Robson learned how to play the guitar and formed a band which was known as the Solid State in 1982.
His acting career started after he auditioned under director Max Roberts who was his previous director at Backworth, the drama centre he spent one night a week at.
From there, Robson was selected to be the lead in the film made by Amber Films that portrayed the contemporaneous social problems faced by working-class people in Thatcher’s Britain.
The soap opera gave Robson his big break in film and it was quickly followed by lots of offers of work.
But Robson officially made his name as an actor in the BBC series Casualty.
After appearing in three series, he moved to national prominence as fusilier Dave Tucker in the drama series Soldier Soldier.
In 1995, one episode called for Robson and his co-star Jerome Flynn to sing a song and ITV was inundated by people wanted to buy the song.
Music mogul Simon Cowell then released the single and it stayed at number one for seven weeks in the UK Singles Chart, thus catapulting Robson into the music industry.
The song gave Robson the opportunity to sign a long-term deal with ITV to star in several of the channel’s dramas, including, Touching Evil, Grafters and Reckless.
In 1996, he set up an independent production company called Coastal Productions, to give youngsters from the North East the opportunities he struggled for.
The company has since produced or co-produced most of Robson’s television work as well as local productions at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle upon Tyne.
In the late 2000s, Robson moved to Channel 5 to present his own show, Extreme Fishing with Robson Green.
The actor is incredibly passionate about angling and has had many spin-offs commissioned for a variety of channels.
This year, he returns to ITV for Grantchester where he has played Geordie Keating since 2014.
Is Robson Green married?
Robson has been married several times.
He was first wed to occupational therapist Alison Olive having been introduced by a close friend.
The relationship with Alison did not make headlines until they were both separated and later on divorced after eight years.
While still being married to Alison, Robson started dating Vanya Seager, a page three model.
Together, they welcomed a baby boy in 2000, which they called Taylor Seager-Green.
Robson and Vanya got married in 2001 and later divorced in 2011.
In 2013, Robson proposed to flight attendant Stephanie Jones but with the pair travelling for work, they eventually broke up.
In 2016, Robson found another love of his life by the name of Zolla Short who left her vicar husband to be with the actor.
