Love Islands Lucie Donlan talks ‘struggling with stretch marks and confidence’

Lucie Donlan first rose to fame when she entered the famous Love Island villa in Mallorca back in 2019.

After making a name for herself on he show, Lucie has had plenty to celebrate in both her personal and professional lives, having colloborated with numerous brands, launched her own collections and recently getting engaged to Winter Love Island star Luke Mabbott.

Now, she's launching her third lingerie line with Ann Summers and in our exclusive interview, the 24-year-old opens up on her own body confidence struggles, her engagement and why she was determined to make the new collection environmentally-friendly…

How does it feel to be collaborating with Ann Summers again? Have you always been a fan of the brand?

Yeah I've always been a big fan of Ann Summers, I’m really excited about this one. This will be the third collection and campaign I've done with them and I think it’s the best one yet. I love all the really bright yellows and purples featured throughout – it’s a really beautiful range. I feel so honoured that they’ve picked me to do it, it’s something I'm really passionate about so I'm super excited.

Which lingerie set is your favourite in the collection?

The pretty persuasive body. It’s really flattering, there’s no underwire, it’s all elastic and it sits really nicely on your figure and feels really comfortable but also very sexy at the same time. On the waistband there's one of our favourite quotes written on it ‘be bad, do good’.

Congratulations on your engagement! What was the proposal like?

Aww thank you, it was beautiful, a gorgeous setting under the northern lights, you can’t get much better than that – it was a dream come true.

Did you have a feeling that Luke might pop the question?

I had a slight feeling he may do it but I wasn’t entirely sure, it was still such a surprise for me.

We always hear when Love Island ends, there’s a WhatsApp group you chat in. Do you all still talk?

Yeah there is, as I live in Cornwall, I don’t get to see as many people as I'd like but me and Maura are still really close, we’ve just been on holiday together, that was my first ever girls holiday so it was really exciting, I needed it after this year.

What have you learnt about being in the limelight since leaving the show?

Making sure that you have some time out and away from the limelight is so important. I’m so grateful I live in Cornwall, it’s a whole different lifestyle from being up in London. For me, I find it really easy to come back home and bring myself back down to earth. Doing activities I love such as being out in nature and surfing really helps. I love having that time out, it’s so easy to get caught up in the fame and limelight and I think it’s really important to continue doing stuff that you did before the show. It’s a great escape, that's why I haven’t done the move up to London.

How have you handled any negative feedback you may have received?

Living in my hometown in Cornwall it’s actually great for blocking out stuff like that and for my mental health, I can be outside on the beach, surfing, it’s like an escape here. I put my phone away and I get out in the gym and do a dog walk and it clears my mind, so it’s really easy for me to escape the negativity.

What type of underwear makes you feel confident and sexy?

Everything in this collection makes me feel so sexy, it’s so feminine, really soft and organic. The collection is also really versatile, you can dress it up by wearing the lingerie under a suit with some heels or under a woolly jumper, it’s up to you.

Is it important for you to feel sexy in lingerie?

I think it’s definitely important to feel sexy and generally feel confident in yourself. Everyones different and everyone struggles with different parts of their body and feeling confident within that. I’ve struggled in the past with stretch marks and feeling confident with that.

Have you always been comfortable in your own skin?

In the past I struggled with my weight but one day I decided I needed to change my way of eating and lifestyle so I got into my fitness and it made me become way more confident in my body. Back in school I really struggled with that but I've come on leaps and bounds since then.

Even doing this campaign and being in front of the camera in underwear, it really does boost your confidence. This is the most natural photoshoot I've done with Ann Summers, I want to show young girls it’s ok to be natural and reveal your natural beauty.

Have you always been a natural in front of the camera?

When I first started modelling, I was so nervous and I didn’t really know what to do or how to pose back then. I think as you grow as a person and when you get to know photographers and the people around you, you naturally become a lot more comfortable in your own skin. Modelling is not how it used to be, anyone can be a model now, everyone is perfect in their own way and everyone has a different look. There’s no stereotype anymore which is amazing.

What advice would you give to someone who’s not feeling body confident?

The gym, getting creative and getting yourself outdoors has always helped me. A simple walk out in nature can boost your mood and confidence so much. It can change your perspective on life and get yourself in a positive mindset. Picking up a paintbrush can be a great method of meditation too. These things can boost your mood so much and that's what comes with confidence.

You and Maura both have collections with Ann Summers, How does your style differ from each other?

We are such good friends, we love the same things, but these collections couldn’t be more different. Maura’s is really sexy and all about the Ann Summers ethos, she really stands for that as a person. Then you’ve got my Knicker Box collection which is still really sexy but is all about sustainability which is what I stand for so I think the difference between our collections is very empowering for women.

Do you have any other exciting projects coming up?

I’ve just shot a documentary with Luke and our dog Bunny, it’s all about rescuing dogs abroad and in the UK. We’re really excited to get that out there as it's a really important message about rescuing dogs, giving them a second life and showing how it’s more rewarding than buying a dog.

Do you have any New Year's resolutions?

I want to work with more sustainable brands. I'm trying to do that more and more. I've got quite a lot of young followers on my social media accounts and I really want to show the younger generation that doing small things for the environment can make a big difference. I want to work with more brands that believe in the same things as me. I’ve worked with companies in the past that don’t really have the same message as me so I want to raise awareness for the brands that are making a difference.

I want to learn more about animals and marine life and volunteer more. I’m going to do a course so if a whale or seal gets washed up on the beach, I want to know how to get them back in the ocean safely.
