Canelo Álvarez Announces Billy Joe Saunders Fight After Defeating Yildirim

Canelo Álvarez has confirmed Billy Joe Saunders as his next opponent shortly after storming to an emphatic victory over mandatory challenger Anvi Yildirim in Miami last night.

After a straight-forward victory — that was ended after a blistering third round that forced the Turkish fighter to retire — Canelo announced that on May 8 he’ll be facing U.K.’s undefeated Saunders, in a bout originally scheduled for 2020, that will see the WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight championships on the line.

At the home of the Miami Dolphins and in front of 12,000 fans, Canelo made light work of Yildirim. After barely landing a punch on the Mexican and being floored in the third, Yildirim retired on his stool soon after.

The win now leaves 30-year-old Canelo with a professional record of 55-1-2, with his only defeat coming against Floyd Mayweather in 2014.
