Karen Hauer has opened up on her former marriage with fellow Strictly Come Dancing star Kevin Clifton.

The 38 year old, who was recently compared to a "cow" in a funny joke about her dancing by Maisie Smith, spoke out about the end of her relationship with Kevin on The Divorce Club podcast.

Speaking to comedian and author Samantha Baines, the star explained: "When you work with your husband, I worked with my ex for nine years, ever since we started dating we were always together."

Karen and Kevin first met each other on the live dance show Burn the Floor back in 2011, they later joined Strictly Come Dancing together. The pair tied the knot in 2015, but after a short marriage, they decided to go their separate ways in 2018.

She continued: "Five, six years down the line, things started just kind of going wrong, little things… Like just even a phone call, like 'Oh you didn't call me the whole day. Oh that's fine, you're working, I'm working too, we're working the same job but I take time to call you. Okay great…'

"There were little attacks that we would do to each other."

Karen, who recently reportedly split from her boyfriend of two years David Webb, went on to explain that she was jealous and wanted more attention from Kevin, 38.

She said: "And then the fights, I was getting jealous, but I was only jealous because I wasn't getting the attention I wanted from my husband. I didn't understand why. I started gripping, trying to pull at him. I just wanted answers.

"It just got really nasty, like over night. At the time I didn't know how to just let him be, I wanted my husband.

"In the end, we just couldn't take it anymore, we were both in the same house. I remember I woke up one morning and you know when you sleep with someone but you don't actually feel them there? It felt like that. I would talk to him and ask him, 'So what do you want to do?' and he'd be like, 'I don't know'.

"I'd then ask, 'Do you want to break up, do you want a divorce?' He just said, 'I don't know, I need time'. It was just a bit of a waiting game for me.

"I still have a lot of love for my exes. But you know, when you wake up and you know, you know it's ending today. It really felt like that. I got out of bed, we looked at each other and we knew."

Karen confessed that jealousy was the not the only thing that tore them apart as she continued: "Obviously, other things happened, there were other factors that happened, that really hurt us both. But I thought… I would have never let go of it. I wouldn’t have never, never let go of it.

"I would have liked to have fought for it. It took me a year after we separated to actually let go of him. It took me a long time to cut the umbilical cord that I had connected to him."

Karen added: "Huge lessons for me. Because of that break-up and what I had to go through emotionally, physically work wise and in the public eye – it made me stronger, and it made me realise what I really need to work on, and that was me.

"I had to work with him for two, three years after we got separated and it was hard because you can see how much love you have for one another, and the respect."
