Prince Harry Says He Had to Leave "Toxic" Environment But "It Was Never Walking Away" from the Royals

Surprise! The Late Late Show dropped its tour bus interview with Prince Harry last night, and wow, some! things! were! said! In between joking around and Harry dishing on BB Archie, James asked his friend why he left the royal family. And Harry clarified that he didn’t leave, he simply stepped back.

“It was never walking away, it was stepping back rather than stepping down,” he explained. “It was a really difficult environment as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like. It was destroying my mental health. This is toxic, so I did what any husband and what any father would do which is ‘I need to get my family out of here’ but we never walked away.”

Harry also made it clear that he and Meghan are still very much living a life of service, a pointed reference to Queen Elizabeth’s statement about them leaving, which said “in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.”

Ahem, as Harry told James, “Whatever decisions are made on that side I will never walk away. I’ll always be contributing. My life is public service so wherever I am in the world it’s going to be the same thing.”

Reminder that Harry and Meghan are scheduled to sit down together in a tell-all interview with Oprah that airs on CBS March 7. Clearly he’s in the mood to chat, and I, for one, am here for it.

You love all the deets on the royals. So do we! Let’s overanalyze them together.
