Michelle Heaton and her husband Hugh Hanley have opened up about how bad things got before the Liberty X singer checked into rehab earlier this year.
Michelle, 42, sought help for drug and alcohol addiction this year after Hugh staged an intervention with the help of a group of his wife's closest friends.
However, in a new interview with OK!, Hugh reveals that a previous attempt to halt Michelle's drinking and drug "failed".
Recalling the 2019 intervention, he told us: "She kicked and screamed and convinced us she would stop. But it only seemed to drive her drinking underground and she started hiding things more."
Michelle then explained: "It became about lying and manipulation. Often something happens to make people addicts, but I look back and I was always an addict.
"I was addicted to things early on like slimming pills, bingeing and then not eating properly, and even working out.
"I’m not saying that’s what made me an alcoholic, but I think going through the menopause so early, and the hysterectomy and mastectomy, and not getting counselling, were some of many catalysts."
Recalling the final days before she checked into The Priory in April, Michelle added: "About 48 hours before I went in, I’d drunk copious amounts of alcohol and was almost in a fight with a friend, and I just remember being verbally abusive to Hugh.
Hugh then explained how he was feeling: "Four days before going to the Priory she also had a very bad fit in bed at 2am. She wouldn’t stop shaking and her mouth was drooling. That was scary and it really spooked her.
"Her skin was also changing colour and she hadn’t eaten for days. Things had got so bad there was no way out.

"She was told in September 2020, with her liver the way it was, she was going to die if she did nothing about it."
He added: "Fast-forward to April and Michelle was vomiting constantly and on the toilet constantly. It was heartbreaking to see. Nothing would get through to her."
Michelle said: "My skin was translucent and you could see all my veins. I was skinny but I had a very big hard belly and my liver was protruding.
"I also wasn’t washing for days and my hair was falling out and had become very thin because of the alcohol abuse and hormones. I’d gone down to 7st 13lbs," she continued.
"My body was shutting down and couldn’t function without the alcohol. I’d be sick with it but I’d be worse without it and shaking.
"So many times I would wake up in the morning and scream for help, knowing no one was in the house."
