Luke Bryan and Darius Rucker teamed up to perform a cover of John Mellencamp‘s 1995 classic “Small Town” during the CMA Best of Fest television special on Monday (July 13) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
The CMA Award-winners had their respective bands backing up the performance, staying at a safe distance between each other. Fans watched the performance from their homes as the event took place inside a completely empty stadium, which normally used to be full with over 50,000 fans during the festival.
The three-hour program, hosted by Bryan, saw 28 performances overall, including featured or revisited plays from top singers, including Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Garth Brooks, Rascal Flatts with Little Big Town, Kane Brown, Maren Morris and Brooks & Dunn.
Robert Deaton, CMA Executive Producer, said it was a moment he will never forget and it reminded him never to take the festival for granted again.
“It was a reminder of why we love music so much,” he said. “It was dramatic seeing them in an empty stadium, but it’s so, so great because they were playing music … and they were so happy.”
Next year’s CMA Fest is scheduled to take place between June 10-13.
