Former football manager Harry Redknapp, 74, has revealed how he made amends with his wife of 54 years, Sandra, after running her over in a freak accident five years ago. The former football player spoke to Andy Jaye on his self-titled podcast about the traumatic moment and told how he made it up to Sandra, 74.

It was a shock to her, it was the biggest shock she could have

Harry’s childhood sweetheart Sandra was seriously injured when the star, who was driving his Range Rover at the time, ran over her foot.

Sandra reportedly got her coat caught under the car as it pulled away, leading her to scream out in pain as she was dragged along a road in Bournemouth, causing the former Tottenham Hotspur manager to immediately brake.

Unfortunately she had injured her foot and was bleeding heavily, which stained the road.

The mother-of-two was rushed to hospital where she underwent surgery on her foot following the traumatic incident.

Speaking out about how he made amends with his wife after the freak accident, Harry told the podcast host the one simple thing he did, which proved to be a “shock” to his wife.

He said: “I took her a cup of tea up in bed.

“It was a shock to her, it was the biggest shock she could have.”

The star went on to reveal that getting up before Sandra was no easy feat, as she wakes up at the crack of dawn every day.

He continued: “It’s very hard to take Sandra a cup of tea in bed, she gets up at 6am every morning, I don’t really want to be getting up at half past five.

“Getting up before my wife is not easy,” he added.

However, the former West Ham manager went on to say that he would have done anything to make it up to her.

“I love her to bits and it hurt me so bad to do anything to her,” he said.

After the former I’m A Celebrity winner accidentally “sliced her ankle in half” Sandra needed surgery.

Addressing the moment he realised what had happened, Harry added that he felt horrified about having hurt his wife, before putting the blame squarely on himself for not “concentrating”.

“Accidents are so easily done. I felt horrendous.

“Thankfully after lots of surgery her ankle healed up – and she has still never really blamed me even though it was absolutely my fault for not looking in the mirror and concentrating.”

Following the traumatic event, Harry told the BBC: “It was just a freak accident you know.

“Sandra went across the road and unfortunately she had gone behind the car to cross over the road and as I went to drive off I drove over her ankle.

“It’s lucky, if the full weight of the car had gone over the ankle god knows what would have happened to her. We’re ok,” he confirmed.

The couple were seen returning home 24 hours after the accident, with Sandra on crutches and her right leg in a cast.
