Frances Tophill is a familiar face for fans of gardening shows as a presenter on both Gardeners’ World and Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden. However, she has opened up about how Alan mentored her and once gave her an invaluable piece of advice.
The pair have worked together for many years and Frances has spoken openly about how helpful his advice has been.
The gardener recently opened up about how gave her a warning when she began her career.
She explained: “This is what Alan has always said to me, ‘If you try and sell something, if you try and be something, you’re going to fall down.
“‘The only thing you can ever be consistently is yourself.’
“And that’s what he’s done and that’s what he is.”
Appearing on the Kitchen Garden Magazine podcast On The Grapevine she continued about what the challenges would be if she wasn’t herself.
She continued: “It involves a lot more acting than you realise because you have to do things over and over again.
“But I’m not an actor, and none of us are actors, and so we’re just all ourselves.”
Elsewhere, Frances has been sharing what she’s been up to on her Instagram page.
The star recently posted about appearing in the latest episode of Gardeners’ World.
She’ll be in the BBC Two show tonight as Monty Don takes his absence for a few weeks.
She penned about the episode: “Catch up again with @theallotmentflorist and myself on tonight’s #gardenersworld tonight at 8pm on bbc2.
“We filmed this a few years back and had a lovely day chatting and picking flowers in the sunshine. Can’t beat it.”
Following her insight, she was inundated with support from her followers, with some predicting she’ll be the main presenter on the show one day.
One replied: “I look fwd to day you are running Gardener’s World! But for now delighted re tonight!” (sic)
Another added: “@francestophill as much as I love Monty, having you lead the show would be awesome too!!! Maybe once he is retired.”
“Yes Frances, you’d be fab as GW presenter, all the right qualities,” penned a third.
Frances and her co-presenter Anit Anderson took over hosting duties on the show a few weeks ago.
Helming the gardening programme from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.
Among those praising their performance was Monty himself who shared his thoughts on Twitter.
He penned: “Congratulations to Arit and Frances and the team for a brilliant GW last night. I loved it.”
