Gardening expert Carol Klein, 75, has revealed she believes she had coronavirus after falling ill with symptoms last year. At the time, testing was only just being rolled out, but she said it was “pretty clear” she had the virus. After she fell ill, the television star said her husband Neil Klein also developed symptoms.
Carol recalled first feeling unwell when the pair travelled back to Devon.
She said: “It was on our return journey that I began to feel ill.
“I’d had a few symptoms earlier but they were ignored in the general excitement.
“I went to bed and stayed there for a few days.
“Neil looked after me wonderfully as he always does but as I got better he began to feel poorly.”
The horticultural expert said her spouse later experienced worse symptoms, but said they both “weathered the storm”.
Thankfully for the pair, they recovered and decided to shield to keep safe.
To keep busy, Carol focused on her garden during lockdown.
She added in her column with The Telegraph: “The fact that, as the pandemic struck, primroses were starting to bloom and new shoots were bursting through the soil made it easier to cope with what was happening.”
The gardener went on to say she counted herself as “one of the lucky ones” in lockdown for having her husband by her side.
The couple have been together for 50 years and have two children.
Carol and Neil’s youngest daughter gave birth to a son just days before the first lockdown.

“We were so lucky to have been around when he was born and, though we were only there for a few days, what magical days they were,” she added.
Due to the pandemic, Carol missed out on attending The RHS Chelsea Flower for the first time in 30 years.
The mother-of-two said the work and creativity behind the popular event was “wasted”.
“It was heartbreaking especially for small nurseries, many of whom depend on the shows,” she added.
Tonight, Carol returns to screens with the second series of her show.
The expert continues to offer advice to Britain’s gardeners from her own cottage garden, this time during the spring season.
As part of the series, she discusses the joy of dividing snowdrops and primroses to increase their number.
Gardening with Carol Klein airs tonight at 7pm on Channel 5.
