Diana, Princess of Wales, was the most photographed woman of her time, showcasing her stylish outfits including cycling shorts and longline blazers. The royal established herself as an icon for many reasons – with her fashion choices being just one of them.
A new study by global fashion brand, PrettyLittleThing, has found that Princess Diana is still the biggest royal style influencer.
By analysing search volumes in the UK and US, the fashion company found that there were more than 200,000 searches for styles and outfits inspired by Princess Diana.
When Diana was alive, millions became inspired by the Princess’ fashion statements, with pieces like her sheep jumper being replicated by retailers across the country.
Despite her style coming from more than 25 years ago, Diana’s iconic style was said to be way ahead of her time, with many of her outfits still being classed as fashionable today.
Items like cycling shorts with a baggy jumper or mom jeans with a blazer are still sold in retailers today.
PrettyLittleThing found that some of Princess Diana’s outfits include styles that are trending today.
They said: “One example of this is blazers, her love for blazers is very obvious when looking at her most iconic outfits over the years and right now, blazers and blazer dresses are one of the biggest trends.”
The fashion brand found that there has been a 750 percent spike in demand for the style in the past month in both the UK and US.

There are also many style fan pages for the Princess with them regularly posting Lady Di’s most iconic looks.
One fan said: “She’s an icon.”
Another wrote: “Her fashion statements will never disappear.”
Speaking previously to Express.co.uk, Lead Stylist Supervisor at Stitch Fix UK, Rich Simmons, explained how Diana’s style evolved through the years.
He said: “Princess Diana entered the spotlight as a style icon. Whether she was sporting lemon-coloured dungarees on the polo field or on the steps of St Paul’s in her Emanuels wedding dress, her outfits were always something to admire.
“Though she admitted in her 20s that she only owned ‘one long dress, one silk shirt, one smart pair of shoes, and that was it’, and that she rushed out to buy ‘six of everything’ in the run up to the royal wedding, she went on to rule the art of royal dressing.”
Princess Diana was also a huge fan of added colour to her looks, with the royal regularly wearing bright pink, red or blue.
The expert added: “Colourful coats then became dresses and tailored suits, as she grew in confidence and took ownership of how she represented herself. Catherine Walker (of whom the Duchess of Cambridge is also a fan) dressed her for most occasions, from banquets to royal tours.
“Her bold choices and her departure from her usual ‘safe’ style was marked when she danced with John Travolta in a blue Edelstein dress. Her off-the-shoulder style inspired a generation, crimsons and pinks were a staple, and polka dots were aplenty.”
Following Princess Diana is Meghan Markle who received a huge 148,550 searches for style inspiration, followed closely by Kate Middleton with 145,400.
Meghan and Kate are both known for their ability to wear ballgowns and smart dresses as well as dressing down in more casual clothing.
PrettyLittleThing found that Princess Anne is the fourth biggest royal style icon with 6,890 searches for her style and outfits, followed by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
According to the company, Princess Anne style searches have seen an increase of 600 percent.
Princess Beatrice ranked sixth with 2,380 searches, but the company predicts this will increase with fans searching for her maternity style.
Completing the list is Sophie, Countess of Wessex with 1,830 searches, Queen Elizabeth II with 1,540 searches, Princess Eugenie with 1,340 searches and Zara Tindall with just 220.
