The condition of the hair which grows out of your scalp is mainly determined by your genes and your lifestyle choices, from smoking to diet. However, once the hair grows out of your head it is no longer connected to your metabolism and its condition depends on exterior factors such as harsh products, chemical treatments, UV rays from sunlight, chlorinated pool water, salty seawater, aggressive heat styling and incompetent hairstylists just to name a few things. Express.co.uk chatted to renowned hairdresser Michael Van Clarke to find out five ways to tame frizzy hair FAST.
Stay away from silicones
Avoid silicones that are often found in poor quality hair care because these will make your hair drier and frizzier.
Michael said: “Cheap harsh cleansers strip the hair leaving it vulnerable and hydrophobic silicones leave the hair shaft dehydrated and fragile.
“So many styling products contain harmful silicones and plasticizers. If hair looks rough and frizzy and by wrapping each strand in a cling-film mask it can look silky and shiny, who would say no to that?
“Not enough people yet understand that this creates an addiction to chemical additives that whilst making the hair look lovely today, damages it further, so necessitating more of the cosmetic product next time.
“Silicones are like drugs for hair. They can provide a happy glossy veneer today but are rotting the hair from the inside.”
You’ll rarely see the word silicone on an ingredients list, but lookout for the following scientific names of the most common Silicones in hair and beauty products, including Dimethicone, Cyclopentasyloxane, Methicone, Amodimethicone, Phenyltrimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Divinyldimethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone Copolyol.
Shampoo and condition every time
Michael said: “Choose quality shampoos and conditioners without silicone, such as our Cashmere Protein Conditioners.”
Some people don’t use conditioners because they think this makes your hair more greasy and heavy, especially if you have oily skin and fine hair.
However, Micahel this indicates you were using the wrong kind of conditioner that was most probably laced with silicones and heavy oils to give shine.
He said: “Shampooing lifts the cuticle and the conditioner is important to reseal and protect the hair shaft.”
Whilst SPF has been adopted into many skincare regimes, it is neglected still in haircare.
Michael recommends using an effective treatment with sunscreen for protection in your hair daily.
He said: “ LifeSaver and LifeSaver UV help protect the structure and the colour of hair from the sun.
“Even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the UV rays still get through and you should be protecting your hair.
“Hats or scarves are best – the UV rays of the sun break down the molecular structure of hair, which unlike skin doesn’t recover its appearance within a few weeks. Long hair can take years to renew.”
Stop blow drying
Aggressive styling techniques such as intense blow drying can go way beyond just dehydration to actually melting the hair.
Michael said: “There is no recovery from these damaging techniques until the damage has grown out or been cut out.
“If you are trying to grow your hair, throw away your nozzle, keep a one-inch distance from the hair and stop drying once that section is dry.
“Throw away your dryer nozzle. Your nozzle unnecessarily concentrates the heat and can lead to excessive damage.
“Keep a one-inch gap between your hair and the end of the dryer.”
Be gentle with your hair when you’re brushing it, no matter how knotty it gets.
Michael said: “When hair is wet, use a wide-tooth comb to gently ease out knots from the ends first before working up to the roots.
“Don’t believe the myth of brushing hair 100 times before bedtime. Once it’s brushed, further friction just wears it out quicker.
“Choose a good stylist – The right haircut, well-executed, can save you 95 percent of the time you may be spending over-styling your hair.”
